On the left is the Rose and Crown public house - a short way up from which stands John Bilton. Beneath the tree the church warden (known locally as 'Long John Simms) is keep in conversation with Mr Monty Wells, the local carrier, in his horse and trap. Note the bucket suspended beneath Monty Wells' cart - this was used for safe transportation of eggs from his chickens being taken to market.
