The old lattice bridge was believed to have been erected at the station in about 1880. It was manufactured by Richards of Leicester. In 1986 however, it needed to be replaced as part of the project to electrify the East Coast main line. Work to replace the bridge took place overnight on Saturday / Sunday 21/22 June 1986 with the frame of the new bridge being erected in less than ten hours. The contractors were British Fabrications Ltd who completed the work during the following week by putting metal sheeting along the sides and roof to fully enclose the structure. The new footbridge spanned the rails from platform one to two and three.
