Newark Town Hall was designed by John Carr of York in 1774-76, with this being Carr's imitation of the Robert Adam ceiling in the Old Library at Harewood House. The chandelier, seen prominently here, is (needless to say) not in keeping with the original style and was indeed, criticised as a 'terrible desecration' by TV antiques expert Arthur Negus when he paid a visit to the town in October 1971. The town hall was extensively and sympathetically renovated in the 1980s with all the traces of the chandeliers being removed.
