Kirkgate
Newark on Trent
England

The picture by T Allom (engraved by J W Lowry) shows the view up Kirkgate from its junction with Middlegate (right). The spire (somewhat stunted as drawn here) of Newark's parish church of St Mary Magdalene dominate the scene, whilst a fully laden stage coach proceeds on its way northwards along the Old Great North Road coach road to York. It has probably just set out from Gilstrap's Hotel (one of Newark's major coaching inns) the sign for which (simply reading 'Hotel') may be seen on a building on the right of the picture.
