Courtesy of H Brown

Corner of Appleton Gate and Sydney Street
Newark on Trent
England

The picture is taken with Appletongate on the right, looking straight down into Sydney Street (left). The corner house (no. 86 Appletongate) bears the date 1888.This picture dates from the second world war - note the white stripes on the lamppost and tree (right) to make then more visible in the blackout, and the brick air raid shelter (also white visibility paint) at the entrance to Sydney Street. Mr H Brown (who too this photograph, and who used to live in the corner home) used the air raid shelter as a darkroom for his photographic work
