Although Porters Grocery shop is best known in Newark at the corner of Bridge Street, for a number of years they did operate a second store in the Market Place (seen here shortly before the business closed). This was opened c 1920. The Bridge Street shop was founded c 1894 when Mr George Howard Porter bought the grocery business from his erstwhile boss. The Market Place shop was run by one of Mr Porter's sons, Cyril, and traded from c 1920-60. See NCCE003137 for further information on Porters. Next to it is Coynes toy shop with an advertisement in the window for Tri-ang toys.
