Carter Gate
Newark on Trent
England
The workshop was built at the top of the garden at the rear of Harrison's premises on Cartergate. Access to it was via the short lane which ran between no's. 21 and 23 London Road. Power for the generators and electric lighting in the workshop was provided by a Crossley gas engine (to the right, behind the stove). Note the lantern slide projector on the workbench on the left. Harrison was interested in photography as well as automotive engineering and bicycles; he would have been at the cutting edge of the technology of his time, and his photographs of his shops and vehicles give us a rare insight into Edwardian innovations in transport and the application of science to everyday life. To see more of his pictures, use the 'further search' option on the search page, then look on the drop-down list of 'photographers' under 'Harrison, W P L'.
