The Rose Queen is a girl or young woman crowned with flowers and honoured as queen. The rose is considered the queen of flowers and the first rose queen was deemed to be Mary Rose Tudor (1496 - 1533, Henry the VIII's sister) who was considered to be one of the most attractive women in Europe at the time. The origins however probably lie with the pagan celebrations of the May Queen. The Rose Queen festival is a celebration of fertility and beauty, and of the promise of love.
