This picture appeared in the Newark Herald on 2nd September 1939. It shows the first batch of evacuated children to arrive in Newark. Note the labels attached to each child and their suitcases and gas masks. When, by January 1940, there had been no bomb attacks on their home town, many of these children returned home. Back row, fourth from the right is Mrs Burroughs (grandmother) holding Anne Clarke, then Mrs Clarke (mother) holding John Michael Clarke.
