Newark Northgate (LNER) Railway Station
Newark on Trent
England
This train is bringing ballast from Scunthorpe for spreading beneath sleepers of the Railway line. It is leaving Newark Northgate (LNER) Railway Station heading south on the slow-up line (indicated by the signals in the background). On the left of the picture is the up bay line and platform. Some of the vehicles on a ballast train were specialised, designed to help in laying ballast on the track. To aid identification the different types were given names on a marine-life theme, for example Walrus, Shark or Dogfish.
