For a full report of this event, see the Newark Advertiser, Jan 1936 p 10, column 1(Available at Newark Library). Edward VIII, eldest son of George V and Mary of Teck, was born June 23, 1894. He wished to marry an American divorcee, Wallis Simpson, and so abdicated the throne after reigning a scant eleven months. He was granted the title The Duke of Windsor, and lived in exile in Paris until he died in 1972.
