This view was taken looking South along Castlegate, the entrance to Boar Lane may just be discerned between the Ram Hotel and Newstead's newsagents shop. Earliest references in the 16th century refer to the Ram Hotel as being situated in the Market Place, although it is believed to have moved to it's Castlegate location by 1775. The three storeyed building seen here dates from the late 18th Century. The novelist George Eliot stayed at the Ram in 1868 and described it in her diary as 'an old inn, opposite the ruins of the castle.' In 1939 (nine years before this picture was taken) the Ram was purchased by the Home Brewery. It was re-named 'Ye Olde Market' and continues under this name. The Royal Oak, meanwhile, is also of 18th Century origin. One former licensee was William White who designed the ironwork for Newark's Trent Bridge when it was widened in 1848.
