This view shows the interior of Staythorpe Signal Box on the Midland Railway Line from Nottingham to Lincoln. Specifically, it shows the wheel and worm used to operate the level-crossing gates. The gates are closed to rail traffic. As the wheel is turned, the bar attached to the worm traverses the length of the worm to the wheel end, opening the gates to rail traffic. Note the sturdiness of the cast-iron frame. Both gates are operated simultaneously. The gates were to be replaced in September 1978 and replaced by continental-type barriers. The photograph was taken by kind permission of signalman P. Spratley.
