My father William Buchanan ( back row, far end right) was studying at Nottingham University in 1942 but at weekends he was assigned to The Royal Engineers to train in preparation for war. He told me they did lots of marching and building bridges. When it was his turn to help with the war effort he did not go into The Royal Engineers but was sent down the mines as part of The Bevan Boy initiative.
