This photograph was taken from the old Town Lock. On the left is the Swan and Salmon Public House. In the centre background is Nicholson's Tower (belonging to the former ironworks of William Nicholson & Co.) On the left are cars parked on the site of the one-time Newcastle Gardens, popularly known as 'Luny Park'. Newark Castle, on the right, was founded in the 1130s by Bishop Alexander, of Lincoln, known as 'The Magnificent'. It was largely destroyed in the Civil War, in the 1640s.
