In the book Circular Tour, Seaside pleasure riding by tram written by Brian Turner, there is, on page 29, a virtually identical picture which states that the young lads name was Bill Latham and the picture was taken outside the Oxford Hotel. This was a regular stopping point for photos to be taken, helped by the fact that there was a regular distribution of cigarettes at Christmas at the depot where the trams originated. This continued until 1927 when the tramway committee stopped the practice. Bill himself was the son of the landlord of the Oxford (information kindly supplied by Mr A Bailey). The picture is dated as 1890, though the clothes are very much of the late 1910s / early 1920s fashion, certainly the hats that the women are wearing.
