Retford

The cannon was given to the town after its capture at Sebastapol (Crimean War) in the late 1850s. The cannon may have been donated by Lord Palmerston (at the same time that he presented Derby and Nottingham Arboretums with similar cannons). The Crimean War broke out in October 1853 and lasted until February 1856. Great Britain did not come into the war in support of the Turks until 1954. In September, the allies landed in Crimea and besieged Sebastapol for a year. The war ended in 1856 when the Treaty of Paris was signed by all sides in London. This image was taken from a glass plate negative from the Retford Times. The cannon was rescued from being melted down for the war effort in 1942, and was then restored.
