Steam Traction Engine, Newark?, c 1900s

Newark on Trent
Nottinghamshire
England

The picture is taken from a collection of glass negatives dating from the early 1900s found in a former industrial building in Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire. Some of the pictures in the collection show scenes in Newark, so we presume that this image, too, may have been taken close to the town. This appears to be a Rushton and Hornsby road locomotive of a type built in Leeds about 1895 and re-engineered by Trittons of Lincoln in the late 1890s or very early 1900s as a tarmac layer and steam roller. The engine would reach the stretch of road with potholes to be repaired and would then reverse along it pouring molten tarmac onto the road and rolling it flat. (Additional information kindly supplied by Stephen Manley).
