A Chinese painting demonstration at Hucknall Library, to mark Chinese New Year. The demonstration is being watched by the Mayor. Chinese New Year (as we call it in the West) is the Spring Festival, and is the oldest and most important festival in China. Like all Chinese festivals, the date of the New Year is determined by the lunar/solar calendar rather than the Western (Gregorian) calendar, so the date of the holiday varies from late January to mid February.
