The main counter prior to refurbishment. It had four computer terminals for staff, a till, a machine used to reset the alarms in returned books, books on request, the cds and dvds removed from the display cases, and a diary of events. Note the reference to the very first self-service machine (it was clunky and rarely used at the time).
