Officially called Northern Railway Station but everyone called it Town Station. An extension of the Great Northern Line from Annesley to Pleasley. This image is of the old Sutton Town (MR later LMS) station now the site of the Matalan complex. This was the three quarters of a mile extension from Sutton Junction (MR and later LMS) Station into Sutton, facing on to Station road, and virtually opposite Croft School. The photo shows the local dignitaries at the time of the stations opening. The local trains were referred to as the 'Penny Emma' as the cost of travel to Sutton Junction was, at one time, a penny (1d in old currency) The Emma is a derivative of the initials for the Midland Railway (MR) hence a Penny on the MR became the penny Emma.Additional information byMartin Thorne
