A crowd gathered in the Market Square to watch a parade in celebration of the coronation of King George VI (May 12, 1937). See NCCN000349 for a photograph of the parade. An early Curry's Electrical shop can be seen on the right of the photograph. George VI, born December 14, 1895, was the second son of George V and Mary of Teck. He never expected to ascend to the throne, but became king in 1936 when his brother Edward VIII abdicated. George was king throughout the difficult years of the Second World War. 1939. He followed in his father's footsteps by visiting troops, munitions factories, supply docks and bomb-damaged areas to support the war effort. He, his wife (the late Queen Mother) and two daughters (Elizabeth (the present queen) and the late Princess Margaret, stayed at Buckingham Palace for the duration of the war. George VI died from cancer on February 6, 1952.
