Farndon Ferry is situated opposite the Britannia Inn. The windlass was a mechanism for pulling the raft-like ferry across the Trent. It worked using a chain laid under the water from bank to bank (now rotted away). The ferry was frequently used to transport barge-towing horses from the Farndon towpath to the Rolleston side of the river. (information kindly supplied by Farndon Local History Society)
