In 1927 in his book 'A descriptive list of the Medieval dovecotes in Nottinghamshire', J Whitaker counted 728 tiled nesting places, each running 16 into the walls. 'The entrance places were 6 inches wide and 6 inches high. Under each row were landing places of 4 inches in width.... The rows of nesting places went down to within two feet of the ground.
