Heading south (for London) with an 'up' express. This locomotive, formerly known as 'Herring Gull' was built in January 1938 and withdrawn from service in 1965. Note also in this picture: in the foreground the right hand track (the 'up' track with 60006 on it) has the old fashioned Bull Head rails, whilst the left hand 'down' track exhibits the then new Flat Bottom rails. Also note in the distance the old (now demolished) footbridge over the lines at the north end of the platform. In front of the trees on the right of the photograph the tall, thin object is a water column. Several tracks in the vicinity gave freight-train engines the opportunity to pause and take on water here without inconveniencing other traffic. The semaphore signals' in front of the vans (i.e. covered wagons) on the right of this view: the 'stop' signal (on the taller post) controls trains travelling on the 'Up Slow' line (i.e. the southbound line which accommodates slow-moving trains). The shorter, narrower signal-arm to the right of this is a shunting signal.
