The statues commemorate the 5 killed in the explosion at the pit in Feb 1957. Brierley Forest Park was the land on which the pit stood/used Known as Sutton Colliery/Brierley Pit (after the influx of men from Brierley Hill, Staffs) or Bread and Herring pit. Original statues were sited at the top of the hill when going from "the oval entrance (Sutton end)" and via remembrance grove. They were moved to the visitor centre area to try and keep them from being vandalised C2006 The statues deteriorated over the years so these are 3rd set
