The Notts. Sanitorium (Ranson Sanitorium)

Ratcher Hill
Mansfield
Nottinghamshire
England

Ranson Sanitorium opened as The Notts Sanitorium, a Tuberculosis Hospital, in 1902, on 50 acres of land on Ratcher Hill, given by the Duke of Portland. The main physician was Dr William Bramwell Ransom, and at his death in 1909, the Sanatorium was named after him. Patients included those suffering from double pneumonia and beds were pushed out on to the verandah at night, in the morning the foot of their beds had snow on it! Fresh air was believed to be the best cure at that time.
