Sutton in Ashfield and District Flying Club 1902 (See note below)

Sutton in Ashfield
Nottinghamshire

The club seemed unusually large for a flying club at such an early date in the history of aviation (The Wright Brothers did not make the first successful flight at Kittyhawk until December 17, 1903), however, close magnification of the trophy in the picture has revealed that men are RACING PIGEON flyers, and sadly not a Flying Club in the modern sense of the word. Showing Front Row l to r :- C Shaw, O Butler, G Hibbert, G Shaw (secretary) J Briggs (president), J Parkin, G Cooper. Behind the front row:- W Hardy, H Leeson, W Flowers, W Goodall, W Cotton, W Buxton (treasurer), W Wass, T Collins, E Moore, N Dudley, S Green, J Beastall, J Kirk, H Toon, J Freer. 3rd row back:- W Goodall junr. J Shaw, A Dennis, S Wright, C Leeson, J Troth, H Smith, G Dennis, J Philips, G Taylor, J Smith. Standing at the very back in the centre are T Malton and N Cockrayne.
