The church was paid for by Sir Charles Seely and became a memorial to his wife, Emily, who died in 1894. The architect for the scheme was J L Pearson whom also designed Truro Cathedral. Building work was done by Nottingham-based J W Woodsend, using stone for the exterior which was quarried in Bulwell.
