King George VI had died in his sleep at Sandringham, Norfolk on the night of 5-6 February 1952 and was succeeded by his eldest daughter, Princess Elizabeth. Picture the Past website contributor Garry Humphreys adds: 'On the balcony of the Public Hall in Watnall Road are the vicar of Hucknall , Kenneth Thompson (in cassock and surplice) and Albert Darlison, wearing a badge of office (chairman of council?) round his neck. The military officers on the right wear black armbands in mourning for King George VI.'
