The mining and metal refining complex of the Bestwood Coal and Iron Company. The pit was sunk in 1872 and the winding engine commissioned in 1876. The ironworks closed in 1928 but the pit carried on into the NCB era. With the closing of the mine in 1971 the site was converted into a country park.
