A panorama looking north from the tower of St Mary's Parish Church. Church Street occupies the foreground, running past the Old Wine Vaults public house towards its intersection in the middle distance with Derby Road (left), Mansfield Road (straight on) and Nottingham Road (right). Facing onto this crossroads is the Sun Inn, to the left of which is the former Ritz cinema (demolished in 1992). Further away, the trees indicate Eastwood Hall, then in use as Area Headquarters for the National Coal Board. The 'hill' beyond is not in fact a natural feature, but the partially landscaped dirt tip belonging to Moorgreen Colliery (closed in 1985).
