Looking south down Church Street from the junction (opposite the Sun Inn) of Nottingham Road, Mansfield Road and Derby Road, towards The Old Wine Vaults pub. Skelton's Chemists on the right hand corner has since been demolished. Note the chemist's mortar above the door which would have served as a symbol denoting what the shop sold; a practice which originated in the days when few people could read signs. The chemist would grind powders and medicines in the mortar with a pestle.
