A Hucknall soldier (21st London Battalion), c 1914-18

Hucknall
England

The caption on the back of this photograph stated that the soldier seen here was of the South Notts Hussars, while it has also been suggested that he belonged to the Sherwood Foresters, as identified by his cap badge being the star shape of the Sherwood Foresters rather than the distinctive oak leaves of the Hussars. However website contributor John Gregory states that the image is actually of a soldier in the 21st London Battalion, rather than the Sherwood Foresters or the South Notts Hussars, and very kindly relates the following information: "The photo in question is certainly the 21st London Battalion (East Surrey Regiment). If you look closely, under his epaulette there is a cloth flash which is a company bar. They wore different colours for each Battalion, also the shoulder title on his epaulette is half round not the 5 tier Notts and Derby".
