This station opened for passenger traffic on 23 August 1875 and was named Bestwood and Arnold . It was renamed Daybrook for Arnold and Bestwood park in March 1876. In August the same year it was renamed simply to Daybrook. The tunnel under Mapperley Plains (Mapperley Tunnel) is on the GNR line. There is a 1442 yard tunnel (Sherwood Tunnel) on the NSR between Sherwood Station and St Ann's Well Station running beneath Mapperley Rise and Woodborough Road. It emerged just beneath the grounds of Walter Hall's School in a deep cutting. The railway came to Daybrook in August 1875 and was part of the GNRs Derbyshire and North Staffordshire extensions from Grantham and Nottingham.
