Ilkeston or Bennerley Viaduct is one of the last remaining wrought iron lattice-girder viaducts in the country and is listed Grade II. Built in 1876-77, it crosses the Erewash Valley on 16 spans for 484 yards, carried on piers 56ft high. It was constructed as part of the Great Northern Railway line from Nottingham to Derby Friargate and Burton-upon-Trent, which closed in 1968. In this view a pair of English Electric Type 1 diesel-electric locomotives (Class 20) double-head a mineral train on the ex-Midland Railway Erewash Valley main line. The photographer is looking north from Awsworth Road.
