Borehole, Langold Lake, Langold, c 1950s

Langold Lake
Langold
England

Lakeside Borehole. This exploratory borehole was commenced by the Wallingwells Mining Company Ltd assisted by German Engineers in 1911. Though several boreholes were completed the idea of a colliery did not come into fruition until 1923 when the project was taken over jointly by Doncaster Collieries Association Co. Ltd and the Sheepbridge Coal and Iron Co. Ltd who formed the Firbeck Main Collieries Co. Ltd. The borehole itself formed an artesian well and continues to produce water up t the present time. The water is rich in minerals and is said to have spa qualities, however it has a terrible taste and smell. Similar water was supplied to the houses in Langold in the 1920s but it cased an epidemic of carbuncles and boils and Worksop Rural District Council then took over the supply.
