Mansfield's first museum was erected on the site of the present one in 1904. The building, a very large corrugated iron hut, had been a Roman Catholic church in Sothwark, London, and was bought by a Mr Bailey to house his natural history collection in Cornwall. Mr Bailey came from Mansfield and decided to give his collection to the town.
