Dr Griffin was the Industrial Relations Officer for the North Notts area of the NCB, Curator of the Lound Hall Mining Museum (which closed down after the miners strikes in 1984) and a lecturer at Nottingham University. He was also a secretary of the Broxtowe Lodge and Chairman of the Notts branch of the NUM. He is the author of: 'The Miners of Nottinghamshire 1881-1914', 'The Miners of Nottinghamshire 1914-1944', 'Mining in the East Midlands 1550-1947' and 'The British Coalmining Industry'.
