By 1844 the MCR had been amalgamated into the Midland Railway Company (MR) and by 1849 the line from Nottingham had been extended to Kirkby-in-Ashfield and onto Mansfield. The station was closed in 1965 as part of the 'Beeching Cut's' in the national rail network, leaving Mansfield with the unfortunate tag of being the largest town in the country without a railway station. Passenger rail services returned to Mansfield in 1995 as part of the second phase of the Robin Hood Line, but facilities remained limited until the re-opening of the station. The Grade Two listed Mansfield Railway Station building was re-opened in January 2001. The
