Major-General Sir John Talbot Coke served in Canada, India, Egypt and South Africa. He was awarded various medals and honours. In 1900, aged 60, he led troops in an assault on the Boers at Spion Kop. He returned home to a hero's welcome. The village between Mansfield Woodhouse and Warsop is named Spion Kop in commemoration. Coke lived at Debdale Hall, the family seat since the 18th century.
