Eric Coates (1886-1957), the composer of light music, was born in Hucknall on 27 August 1886 and the police station featured in his autobiography Suite in Four Movements(1953). Coates is perhaps best known for his compositions By the Sleepy Lagoon(1930 - this became the signature tune for the long-running radio series Desert Island Discs) and the march used in the film The Dam Busters(1955). Picture the Past contributor Garry Humphreys adds: 'After being vacated by the Police, it became a dentists' surgery!'
