Locomotives in engine shed 1963

England

2.11.2020 Mr K. Murray has provided additional information that this photograph was taken at the Rowsley Engine shed, probably during the harsh winter of 1963. Showing 2 'dead' (i.e. not in steam) '8F' class engines: 48395-48001 in train sheds. The train on the left has a snowplough attached. The following information is extracted from 1966-7 Railway diaries sent by Mr J A Thickitt (a railway enthusiast who has supplied many train pictures and nuggets of information to this web-site) :- 'I would like to offer the following reminiscence, which I have extracted from my 1966 & 1967 diaries; the date discrepancy below is interesting, but I cannot resolve it!). '8F' class locomotives 'shedded' at Kirkby-in-Ashfield continued to work coal-trains to Dinnington Colliery (Yorks.) during summer 1966. Engine 48194 was in charge of a train of 'empties' (i.e. empty waggons) on 18 June. (Through trains to this destination from the Kirkby area were usually worked by Sulzer type 2 and, sometimes, 'Peak' diesel-electric locomotives by this date). In November 1966, Kirkby 8Fs' were still rostered to haul 2 freight trains to Worksop (Notts.). Having arrived via the ex-Midland line, the coal-trains departed Worksop Sidings at 10.20 & 11.00, returning south by the same route. One of the trains was identified by the reference '7M65' (the train reporting code, which indicated the class, destination and train number). Through December and into January 1967, when observed, at least one of these trains was a steam 'turn' (i.e. a scheduled '8F' duty). These events were last noted on 21 January 1967, when engine 48063 was at Worksop. NB: the above (eye-witness) account is not consistent with published statements that Kirkby-in-Ashfield 'shed' closed-to-steam on 2 October 1966.' Additional information has also been kindly supplied by Vic Smith: 'Even more strange was the allocation of 8F 48279 to Kirkby in December 1966, a month after the _official_ closure to steam on 2 October 1966. Kirkby-in-Ashfield shed continued to service steam locos until March 1967'.
