Maltby's Boys School was founded in 1836 by Mr John Maltby (d. 1886). Until 1890 its premises were in Bridge Street, when it was transferred to Clerkson Street. At the time of his death, John Maltby was 80 years old. For some time prior to his death he had discontinued active participation in the work of the school. His son, Mr Daniel Henry Maltby, who died on 11 February 1938 aged 83, took over control of the school until July 1928 when it closed. The school thus had an uninterrupted existence of 92 years, and during the whole of that time had been under the direction of only two men. The school, a unique local product, had the reputation of having produced a remarkable crop of successful businessmen.
