The school opened in 1864 as a National school. In the decade following this picture the school reallocated to Brancliffe Lane and the original building subsequently became the Shireoaks village hall. This view shows the school yard with its coal bunker and dustbins. A workman with what may be a cable or hose laid out across the yard stands in the doorway of the boiler room and the original caption for the picture states - perhaps rather wearily - 'the heating system breaks down again'.
