The school opened in 1864 as a National school. In the decade following this picture the school reallocated to Brancliffe Lane and the original building subsequently became the Shireoaks village hall. The original caption for this picture stressed the school's 'situation on [a] busy main road', the blurred car apparently being included to emphasise the point.
