Clifford and Robinson were a Wells and Boring Company who worked around the East Midlands from 1928 till 1943. Richard Clifford and Joseph Robinson (on left) employed a water diviner (Mr Clarke) and went to many farms drilling for water. For example, they went to Mr Thwaites' farm in Barsby, Leicestershire. No borehole existed to serve the village at that time, though a mains connection was planned. A well, 30-feet deep was used to supply a number of cottages. Again, for a builder in Wysall, Notts, they drilled down 80ft, finding shale, iron pyrites, a fossil bed and more shale. The water level in this well settled 45ft below the top of the well. The company was run from 74 Windsor Street in Beeston (hence grid reference, it is not known where this photo was actually taken). Information kindly provided by Joseph Robinson's daughter who has written the outlne of the company called 'Mssrs Clifford & Robinson', now in stock at Beeston Library.
