Interior of St. Michaels Church, Sutton Bonington, c 1960

Main Road
Sutton Bonington
England

Sutton Bonington is a very unusual village because it has two medieval churches, a legacy from the days when it was two villages (see also St Anne's). St Michael's church is on Main Street at the north end of the village. The earliest part of the church is 13th century. The clerestory was added in the 15th century. The tower and spire date from the 14th century but were extensively restored by the Victorians. There are six bells. The font is 14th century and has the unusual feature of three ledges for the parson's book, salt and candle. The stained glass windows are very fine and cover a range of styles from 1860 to 1960. Some of them are by the celebrated Victorian artist, Kempe. The chancel was completely rebuilt by the Victorians in 1876. Taken from http://www.openchurchestrust.org.uk/Churches/SuttonBonMichael.htm
