The Co-op building on the Market Place was constructed in 1898 and, as shown here, was opened to a gathering of 4,000 people. The extensive building housed a grocery store, draper, millinery and tailoring departments and the general offices and boardroom. It also housed a statue of Lord Byron given by the benefactor Elias Lacey in 1903. The store finally closed in 1994.
