Soar Lane
Sutton Bonington

This view was taken looking north west. Pevsner describes this building as being 'timber-framed with brick-nogging on a rubble plinth. Jettied over the street and dated 1661 on the bressumer. The first-floor windows of sliding casements are probably a later insertion to light a framework-knitting shop.' It is said that Matthias Simpkin, a successful wool merchant from Norwich, and his descendants occupied this house from 1696-1805. From here they doled out yarn to outworkers from surrounding villages, and dealt in all sorts of needles, etc., connected with the trade. It is also suggested that Matthias Simpkin brought with him from Norwich a 'nail', which was a bronze pan on a pedestal, and erected it outside his house. Farmers would throw their samples of wool into the pan and were paid 'on the nail'. (information from Sutton Bonington Local History Society)
